Play At Manchester’s In The City 2009

The legendary music industry schmooze, In the City, has just opened it’s books for unsigned bands’ performance registration.

Taking place in Manchester from October 18th – 20th, the event is one part conference, one part music festival – and one massive media spotlight. Founded in 1992 by the late Anthony Wilson from Factory Records and Yvette Livesay, In The City (ITC) has become one of the most important dates in the UK music industry calendar.

Held at The Midland Hotel and throughout the venues and bars of the music-oriented northern city, everyone from record label executives to part-time fans descend on the city for this event. For many, being there is a must.

Applying to play is free of charge and the ITC team welcome submissions from artists of all genres and nationalities. The ITC Unsigned spotlight has one of the biggest signing ratios of any similar event, and has claimed to spawn top acts like Oasis, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay and many more.

You’ll need to include music, biography and an image. For those more in favour of the old skool methods, you can also send three-track CDs with info and pics to the ITC office – details of which are also available by clicking through to the link above.

Bands from outside the UK can apply via SonicBids too. Winning choices from abroad receive up to $1000 towards their travel costs. You can’t get much fairer than that.

The ITC crew are still putting together the keynote speakers, showcases and panels for the conference. Last year Jarvis Cocker and Gold Blade singer and Manchester writer John Robb held talks, and there were panel discussions on topics like What Value Is Fashion To Music? and Can The UK Grime And Dubstep Scene Produce A World-Beating Artist?

Darren Foreman  also known as Beardyman is a beatboxer from London.

Foreman moved to Brighton in 2001 to study at the University of Sussex. After seeing Rahzel play live, he started beatboxing at an improv show in 2002. He was given the nick-name “Beardyman” because at the time, he had a beard. Foreman also often uses the moniker “Professor Bernhard Steinerhoff” when performing for crowds during seemingly serious lectures; often he will begin a serious lecture in a German accent then break into the beatboxing.

Beardyman often uses humour as well as beatboxing in his act. He has impersonated Elvis, dressed as a monkey on stage at Bestival and once posed as an Austrian climate change lecturer before breaking into his set, with over 1 million views on YouTube

Beardyman also features in the Funky Sage ring tones in which he plays a floating head who beatboxes and gives good advice. His video “Kitchen Diaries” which features him combining beatboxing with cooking has been viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube. “Kitchen Diaries” also makes an appearance in ‘South Coast’, a Brighton based documentary about Hip Hop in the UK.

Gareth Johnson is no stranger to recording live music. For years now he’s been drafted in for live mixing duties for the likes of Kasabian, The Who, Kaiser Chiefs and Duffy. Now he’s adding Noel Gallagher to a CV that’s littered with A-listers from the cream of major record labels and a stack of independents too.

For the last four years Gareth has also been involved with the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) gigs, an annual outing for the charity that sees them pack the Royal Albert Hall (RAH) for a week of stellar performances from some of the biggest stars of the day.

As a part of raising awareness for the week-long festival, which kicked off  March 24th, Gareth has been drafted in to capture the sound of rock‘n’roll once again.

To coincide with this year’s concerts, Noel Gallagher released the recordings of his performance at TCT RAH in 2007. The Oasis singer and songwriter performed a selection of Oasis’ greatest songs, as well as some of his favourite tracks by other artists, including There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths and Butterfly Collector with Paul Weller.

The new live disc, The Dreams We Have As Children, was released digitally and as an exclusive covermounted 11-track CD with The Sunday Times.

Over the years Gareth has become a tour-de-force on the live circuit, assembling a rig that he can rely on to get the best results – the artists he’s recording are global superstars, so there can be no compromise and no second takes.

“To capture the performance we use Focusrite Octopre preamps. I chose them because they’re reliable and neutral enough to leave scope for a wide range of mix options.”

“Then for mixdown, I need to be able to instantly recall settings on complex mixes with high track counts, which is where Focusrite’s Liquid Mix comes into its own. Working with racks of traditional outboard on projects like this would be a massive pain, but with Liquid Mix it’s just not an issue.”

“Basically Liquid Mix has revolutionised the mix process by enabling me to introduce some great tones and colour into my mixes. No patchbays, no dodgy cables – just a virtual rack stocked full of the finest outboard known to man!”

Using Liquid Mix also means I can keep costs to an absolute minimum, which is essential when working with the TCT. So the whole rig consists of Focusrite Octopres at the front end, then into the Macbook Pro (and Logic) before bringing in the Liquid Mix. Finally I run the audio through an external 16 channel summing box before taking a stereo mix back into the computer. Of course good monitoring is always important, and for this I use my trusted KRKs.

“The Liquid Mix is a real solution for a very real problem. Yes, of course I want bottomless pockets to buy loads of great outboard for my studio, but that’s just not going to happen. I can, however, afford the Liquid Mix, which is much more convenient and packs just as much of a punch. Ultimately, what we have here is a revolutionary product.”

“Dynamic convolution is a great asset in the studio. I own a few of the units that have been emulated on Liquid Mix, and while it’s nice to look at a rack full of expensive outboard gear, in the context of a large multi-track mix you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the emulation and the real thing.”

“Liquid Mix is a great way to get character, colour and tone into your mix, and really useful for getting elements to jump out in the mix. I used API 550b emulations on the guitars, I love the 1176 on the vocal, while for the strings I opted for the Massive Passive emulation. Then I used the SSL G series comp to glue the mix together. And the results? Well, they’re just awesome.”

Dolphin Music Studio Spotlight: Whitewood Studios

Located in Liverpool’s Elevator buliding (also home to to Dolphin Music) is Whitewood Recordings Studios.

Found located  in one of the cities most vibrant new areas, the Building itself  boasts The Leaf Cafe, numerous  big name artists and musicians alongside the most talked about young acts, graphic designers, software developers and dancers even grace a floor!

All this activity seems to be leading to a valuable asset to Liverpool whilst offering facilites to the artss across a whole spectrum.

Dolphin Music took a snoop around Whitewood Recording Studios and spoke to the two main chaps Robert Whitley and Danny Woodward. We talked pre-amps , the need for outboard equipment and what it takes to make a session smoothly. The live room is spacious and well stocked and their patter is relaxed and welcoming.

How to run your band..Online!

Think it’s hard writing the perfect pop song? Try keeping track of the number of T-shirts buried in the back of your band’s van.

Bandize, a new web service for musicians that’s currently in closed alpha, gives bands a suite of online tools to manage everything from tour bookings and social networking to mundane tasks like accounting and monitoring merchandise levels.

The five musician/web developers behind Bandize say they are trying to cover all the bases in an attempt to make musicians’ lives easier.

“The main thing we’re doing is all of it,” said Beamer Wilkins at the South by Southwest Music festival trade show last week. Wilkins, 25, and his team have been working on the service for just over a year. In fact, their first focus group to discuss Bandize was held at last year’s SXSW festival.

The overlap between music and technology has never been greater. Virtually every band rocks the internet to promote itself these days, using MySpace, Twitter and other popular services to attract new listeners and keep current fans loyal. A wave of iPhone apps like Gigotron, a winner at this year’s SXSW Interactive Web Awards, make it easier for music lovers to find shows they want to see.

Soon, Bandize will deliver business and communication tools that let bands collaborate more easily as they work to take their careers to the next level. Bandize will go to public beta within six months, according to its founders, and will cost no more than $10 per month per band. (Want to try Bandize now? The first 50 Wired.com readers that use Twitter to request a free trial will be whisked into Bandize’s closed alpha.

Bandize lets bands keep track of tour dates, venues and hotel accommodations, and print out tour itineraries. The inventory-management tool keeps track of every T-shirt or CD that is sold or given away, registering the cost of the swag or the profit from the sale. Bandize lets bands sync their social networking info on MySpace and Pure Volume (Bandize is also working with Facebook), and assign tasks to each other and track productivity.

Every band member gets their own Bandize login, making it easier for anybody to update the data at any time, and accounting data can be exported to popular bookkeeping software.

Scott Hansen, a San Francisco-based electronic musician who records and performs as Tycho, has been using Bandize during the closed alpha. He said it “absolutely” simplifies the music biz.

“My manager works with it handling a lot of the day-to-day, and it’s nice to be able to collaborate in a single space instead of requesting e-mails from him,” Hansen said in an e-mail interview. “Feels more like we’re working on things together now.”

Hansen said he finds Bandize’s novel inventory management system especially useful.

“I sell a lot of T-shirts, so it’s cool to see how much I made on merch at each show I played,” he said.

Other web services, like ReverbNation, help bands make the most of their online marketing and distribution efforts, but don’t offer merch-management tools, even though that’s where some bands make a healthy chunk of their earnings. Meanwhile, software solutions like Indie Band Manager offer powerful tools but don’t offer the easy access, flexibility and collaboration possibilities of an online service.

With offices in Austin and in San Jose, California, Bandize developers are working on an open API to allow for more Web 2.0 functionality, and they’re developing an iPhone app so the bass player, for instance, could update publicity info while riding in the van (if he’s within range of AT&T’s mobile network and not strung out).

Bandize’s Andy Miles says he tracked tour information for his now-defunct band Exit the King using an elaborate system of bookmarks in Safari, but the undertaking required lots of maintenance. He tested Bandize on the road and found it helpful, he said.

“I would like to think it’s kind of the tour-booking hoss,” Miles said.

The musicians who created Bandize seem to have thought of almost everything (although Wired.com has not had a chance to test the service extensively yet). Bandize even has a feature for keeping track of your group’s assets, like guitars, amps and other valuables. Entering the data once means it will be easily accessible online if you need to file a police report if your trailer gets stolen while you’re on the road.

“Can you tell me the serial number on your guitar?” asked Miles. “No.”

The service also lets band members assign tasks to their bandmates. While there’s no guaranteeing the bass player will actually put up the fliers when he’s told to, at least “everybody knows now,” said Bandize’s Ajit D’Sa. “There’s no excuse.”

Possibly the best part of a service aimed at notoriously short-lived bands: Musicians can take all their personal data with them when they join another group, and bands can cut off a crazy lead singer  when they kick him out for sleeping with the drummer’s girlfriend.

“When one guy quits the band, you can shut him out” from your group’s account, Wilkins said.

Kanye West to headline Wireless

Kanye West will headline the final day of this year’s Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park.

The rapper, who made a surprise appearance at America’s SXSW festival last week, will headline the event on Sunday 25 July.

As previously reported Basement Jaxx will headline the festival on Saturday 4 July alongside The Streets and Dizzee Rascal.

Tickets for the festival are available from Friday 27 March.

Eminem: has royalty issues.

Eminem’s Relapse album might be set to be released via Universal Music, but a new lawsuit suggests that all is not completely well between artist and record company.

It’s being reported that F.B.T. Productions, Eminem’s publishing company, is suing Universal Music Group for $1.6m for unpaid digital royalties.

The case has come about because of a disagreement over whether a download sale – of a song or ringtone, for example – should fall under a licensing or distribution agreement. When music is sold in a physical format, it’s said to be licensed, and artists receive a higher royalty.

However, it seems that Universal has up to now been putting Eminem’s digital sales under the distribution header, meaning that he’s been paid less.

The trial is expected to feature several high-profile testimonies, including one (via video) from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who’s currently on leave of absence from the company. He’ll be asked to speak about the iTunes Music Store’s relationship with Universal, presumably.

It’s being speculated that a victory for Eminem could be the catalyst for other artists to bring similar cases against record labels.

The Pope’s Microphones

During Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Austria last year, the Holy Father stopped in the cities of Vienna, Mariazell and Heiligenkreuz.

The Pope’s customized microphone model is based on AKG’s new C 5 condenser capsule, without the model’s presence boost adapter installed. Styled in the Vatican’s colors of gold and white, these customized microphones provided AKG’s high-quality, reliable performance for Pope Benedict XVI during all his Austrian stops. “We build professional microphones for the exacting demands of our customers,” explained Alfred Reinprecht, AKG Vice President of Marketing & Product Management. “It has been an enormous privilege to adapt one of our technologically-innovative microphones for use by the Holy Father.”

The custom-made AKG microphones were used exclusively by Pope Benedict XVI from September 7-9, and one of the modified microphones has been offered for a charity auction after the Pope’s visit.

Previous to that, Audio-Technica also provided microphones for the Pope, during his visit to New York in April last year.

A key microphone at all of these events was the Audio-Technica AE6100 Hypercardioid Dynamic Handheld Microphone.

Two other key mics were the ES961 Cardioid Condenser Boundary Microphone and the ES933H Hypercardioid Condenser Hanging Microphone. The ES961s were employed at the Yorkville, St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Seminary events as ambo/pulpit mics and altar backup mics. The ES933H mics were used at the prayer service at Ground Zero.

Said Estrin, “We concealed one of them at the base of the candle the pope lit while saying a prayer and another at the edge of the carpet to pick up the ambient sound as he quietly talked to some of the survivors and families of victims of the attacks. The goal was to have the mics as low-profile as possible, but we needed to pick up the audio for broadcast, so we put them at the base of the candle and edge of the carpet, which made them disappear. They worked like a charm.”

Other mics included ES915ML (18″) MicroLine Condenser Gooseneck Microphones for use on lecterns at the St. Joseph Yorkville, St. Joseph’s Seminary and Yankee Stadium services; four AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Side-Address Microphones to mic the choir at the St. Joseph’s Seminary service; two black ES905 Hypercardioid Condenser Rigid-Pipe Microphones at the St. Patrick’s mass, chosen to blend in with the color scheme of the speakers’ vestments; and an A-T 5000 Series Frequency-agile True Diversity UHF Wireless System.

Beck’s Offering For Record Store Day – Bands Clamour To Support Independent Record Stores

An exclusive seven-inch from Sonic Youth and Beck are the latest offerings for this year’s Record Store Day – a worldwide event in support of independent record stores. The day, April 18th, will see artists joining forces to create exclusive new tracks, live shows, feature bands staffing checkouts, and many more musical goodies.

Over 40 stores in the UK have already signed up and all will be able to sell two split seven-inch singles from the Beggars stable. The first showcases Sonic Youth covering Beck’s ‘Pay No Mind’ and Beck covering their ‘Green Light’. The second will feature Jay Reatard’s ‘Hang Them All’ and Sonic Youth’s ‘No Garage’.

Rough Trade East in London has already confirmed gigs by Sky Larkin and Sunny Day Sets Fire – as well as bands working the tills – for the day, and there’s more to come.

Artists from around the world, from Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows to Ziggy Marley, are adding their voices and faces to the cause. Ronnie from The Killers tells a little tale about a boy, his dad and their indie record store here

Many acts are giving away freebies, such as lyric books from Bruce Springsteen, chocolate from India Irie and special vinyl remixes from Franz Ferdinand.

“I think independent record shops will outlive the music industry,” comments Damon Albarn.  “Long term, their value to people is far greater, because even in our era of file-sharing and blogs, you can’t replace the actual look on someone’s face when they are playing something they really rate and think you should listen to it too. It’s special.”

The event has even joined forces with YouTube to create a Record Store Day channel, where all musical fans and independent record store supporters can add their thoughts. Click here to get involved.

Developed in the States by Eric Levin of Atlanta’s Criminal Records and Michael Kurtz of Music Monitor Network, April 18th will be the second time music fans celebrate independently-owned record stores around the globe.
