VisualVox polyphonic: First published polyphonic autotuner & harmoniser

February 6, 2009

vvox

Audio examples:

Choir before manipulation | Choir after manipulation
Voice before manipulation | Voice after manipulation
Flute before manipulation | Flute after manipulation

Applications:

  • Change chords or single wrong notes in polyphonic recordings
    • To fit pieces into your composition that otherwise would not have been accessible due to their key
    • To creatively play around with recorded audio like with a midi instrument – it will play your musical ideas by a click but it still sounds like the real instrument
  • Isolate the natural harmonics of instruments, manipulate them, take your instruments under the magnifying glasses to understand their sound
  • Create real sounding harmonizations, i.e. make chords out of monophonic parts of audio
  • Correct intonation problems of any instrument or voice while keeping the formants as they are
  • Create artificial vibrato, stretch the formants, rearrange melodies, draw frequency curves with your mouse to access monophonic and polyphonic audio in a way it has never been possible before

Now, VisualVox Polyphonic isn’t without some catches, as you’d expect from the solo-student cheap alternative:

The remaining inconveniences are:

  • It creates very big temporary files.
  • It sometimes misses a note or recognizes a harmonic as an independent note, which can be avoided by optimizing 3 accessible algorithm prameters.
  • It plays back synchronously to the VST host software but the audio start time can not be moved to position x, so one should in most cases export the manipulated audio as a wav file.
  • Only availible as a intel MAC VST plugin so far.
  • Still contains some bugs.

EastWest ‘Silk’. String and woodwind collection

      February 4, 2009

      silk

Sample-based software instrument specialists EastWest have announced their latest product, Silk. It’s a collection of string and woodwind instruments from countries along the Silk Road, the historic trading route that merchants travelled to bring their wares to Europe.

Included are over 25 instruments from China, India and Persia, plus a 30-piece middle-eastern string section. Each instrument has been played by ‘master’ players, and then meticulously multisampled by EastWest with extensive articulations, numerous alternate samples (to avoid repetition), and full phrases “to give the feeling of smooth effortless performance”.
Silk runs on EastWest’s Play engine as a DAW plug-in or in stand-alone mode. In-depth scripting in Play allows for automatic transposition on the fly, so if the user wants to play a riff on, for example, a Chinese Erhu, in an arabic scale, they can choose a scale from a list of ‘microtunings’, select their key, and only samples of notes in that key will be triggered. This, says Silk producer Nick Phoenix, makes the virtual instrument incredibly easy to play and very realistic-sounding.
In other EastWest news, the company have updated their Play engine to version two. The main new feature is the facility to edit Play patches, using the same software tools as the EastWest developers have at their disposal.

      6 Stomp Effects

      • Fender® Blender™
      • Fender® Phaser
      • Fender® Fuzz Wah
      • Fender® ’63 Reverb
      • Fender® Tape Echo
      • Fender® Volume

      Fender® Blender™
A unique germanium fuzz/distortion pedal. With a tone unlike any distortion pedal on the market, the Blender™ is capable of a harsh fuzz effect, great as a tool for Psychedelic and Alternative Rock. Perfect for those who want to create instead of copying, with a bit of experimentation, this pedal can deliver a huge range of unique tones.

      Fender® Phaser
A Classic analog Phase shift effect as heard on countless recordings since the 1970s. The rate control knob alternately illuminates blue and red at the same rate as the phase shifting.

      Fender® Fuzz Wah
A combination of a Fuzz-style distortion effect and a Wah pedal, this is two pedals in one. Due to this combination, and its Fuzz>Wah / Wah>Fuzz selector switch, the Fender Fuzz Wah is capable of effects not easily achieved by traditional units.

      Fender® ’63 Reverb
First introduced in the early 1960s, this classic all-tube spring reverb unit is a must have accessory for all Surf players. Blues and experimental players love it, too. It’s presented here in stomp-box form instead of its original head-style unit. The Fender Reverb is capable of producing an incredibly lush or intense crashing Reverb effect due to its post-guitar, pre-amplifier signal path and unique tube driven output.

      Fender® Tape Echo
A classic tape echo simulation, as seen in the Fender® Cyber-Twin®. The warmth and wobble of magnetic tape lent a wonderful ambience to the echo effects used on recordings of the last 50 years, and those sounds can be recreated easily with Amplitube® Fender®. The Tape Echo’s controls can also be manipulated for experimental lo-fi echo effects, bringing extra creativity to your playing.

      Volume
A classic volume control. Use to control the volume of your guitar signal, or in conjunction with an overdrive/distortion pedal for dynamic control of your signal boost.

In the development of AmpliTube Fender®, IK Multimedia has taken an unprecedented approach to raise the bar of modeling accuracy in order to nail every sonic nuance of the included legendary Fender® gear. Every step in the development process has been constantly supervised and sound-certified, step-by-step, by the tone gurus at Fender® to ensure that the same quality process of real gear tone-testing has been strictly followed in the realization of AmpliTube Fender®.

Never before have you been able to get this close to the real thing on your desktop.

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX 1.7 Now Here

      January 23, 2009

Stylus RMX 1.7 demonstrated at Namm

Spectrasonics demonstrated Stylus RMX®version 1.7 featuring an innovative and completely new capability called ‘Time Designer™’ which intelligently transforms RMX audio loops into different time signatures and features the ability to “Groove Lock” the feel of any groove to another – all in real time.

Time Designer also lets the user create instant pattern variations with smart algorithms based on musical rules, and to ‘simplify’ any RMX groove in a musical manner. Version 1.7 is also the first 64-bit native software release from Spectrasonics and includes useful workflow enhancements to RMX, such as Suite Editing and Host Transport Sync.

Eric Persing, Founder and Creative Director of Spectrasonics notes, “Stylus RMX version 1.7 with Time Designer will be a major creative boost for many users with its ability to instantly Groove Lock to the feel of any groove across the whole core library of grooves and expanders. It’s like suddenly having ten times the amount of grooves at your fingertips! Over the years, many composers and arrangers have requested the ability to have any groove in any time signature: now they can. With all of this and the ability to create pattern variations in a totally musical way, the new version of RMX is almost a rebirth of the plug-in and how it can be used. We are really looking forward to seeing how this inspires our users to take their groove production into brand new musical directions.”

The new RMX version 1.7 reveals a totally new way to browse and use the entire RMX core library and SAGE Xpanders by offering the user the ability to Groove Lock any loop in real time to another loop or MIDI File. The user simply chooses a designated loop as the Groove Lock master, and switches one button: now all the loops that are played as the user browses are Groove Locked to that main feel.

And all of RMX’s Time Designer capabilities are available in any designated time signature. Once new Time Signatures are selected, the browsing experience works the same way – dramatically changing the experience of groove production in time signatures other than 4/4. Working on a 6/8 ballad? Simply choose 6/8 in Time Designer and the entire RMX library is now instantly available rearranged in 6/8 patterns!

For multiple time signatures in a piece of music the user simply sets the first time signature variation, drags and drops the MIDI file to the sequencer, then sets the time signature to a new one and repeats the process for each section of music that requires a new time signature. The MIDI Files that are dragged to the host sequencer are “imprinted” with all the Groove Lock and Time Signature changes in the MIDI data, making it easy to customize the loops further.

Time Designer’s Pattern Variation section allows the user to instantly check out useful variations on a loop – which works differently than the constantly shifting/improvising ‘Chaos Designer’ feature that RMX introduced. Time Designer makes rearrangements of the pattern based on a series of musical rules creating useful variations, and is available for all time signatures (including 4/4 pattern variations). Best of all, Time Designer and Chaos Designer can be used together!

All Time Designer features will also work on third party RMX libraries and imported REX files, as long as the grooves are sliced properly.

RMX version 1.7 also sports several user-requested features such as suite editing for easy customization and better ‘Favorites’ management of users own collections of loops, sequencer host transport sync so that RMX will follow the host sequencer’s transport controls and song position.

Version 1.7 is also the first 64-bit native software release from Spectrasonics, keeping pace with the industry-wide move towards 64-bit systems and access to more RAM. Windows 64-bit compatibility will be released first, then 64-bit Mac versions to follow.

The release date for Stylus RMX v1.7 with Time Designer is March 2, 2009, the update will be FREE to all registered RMX users as a download from the Spectrasonics website.

Here is some details on the previous versions applications.

With a legacy of years of popularity inside hordes of DAW-based studios, IK Multimedia T-RackS 3 brings a new level of sonic fidelity and a host of new tools to the suite.

Using IK’s two proprietary modeling methods—DSM (Dynamic Saturation Modeling) and SCC (Sonic Character Cloning)—T-RackS 3 delivers state-of-the-art renditions of the classic Pultec EQP-1A and Farichild 670 devices, along with a new opto compressor, multi-algorithm brickwall limiter and 6-band linear phase EQ.
